\"VancouverIn seeking out vendors to feature for my blog posts, I\u00a0came across Emily of When Pigs Fly Pastries<\/a>. To better be able to recommend vendors to future brides, I was seeking out\u00a0vendors I have already worked with and can easily vouch for or vendors that I absolutely love and really wanted the opportunity to work together. When I came across Emily’s work, I fell in love with her creations and really wanted to do a feature on her. In the meantime, I can happily say I’ve also had a chance to actually work with her when we worked on my first stylized shoot (more on that later!). Emily made not one, but THREE cakes for this shoot and I LOVED them all. They were so incredibly beautiful (in an elegant and simple way). She knew exactly what I wanted when I described my rustic, naked cake vision to her and she couldn’t have achieved it in a more perfect way. And to add icing to the cake (a little Roxy humour ;) ) .. we were able to enjoy her delectably yummy cakes at the end of the shoot.<\/p>\n

At the shoot, we also managed to do\u00a0an impromptu mini shoot in the rain, getting some\u00a0lovely photos of Emily and her\u00a0cakes and getting\u00a0to know her a little bit better. I love Emily, she has a wonderful personality and is so incredibly helpful. She gave me so many great ideas and has so much knowledge on weddings in general. I would recommend her in a second if you’re looking for a gorgeous cake or your wedding. :) I also love how her fun personality and sense of humour shines through in these photos\u00a0and\u00a0find it remarkable that she’s only been doing this job for three years but has already gained so much recognition in the business and does such incredibly amazing work. How did you start out?<\/h3>\n
\n

I graduated pastry school in 2009. Afterwards I found myself making cakes and cupcakes for friends and family while working in other bakery settings. Before long\u00a0their<\/i>\u00a0friends and families were wanting to order and the business formed itself faster than I could have ever imagined. I went back to school and took a business\/hospitality management program to round out my skills. I quit my job, rented a commercial kitchen space, and went full time with my own orders.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s your favourite thing about the baking business?<\/h3>\n
\n

I l\"Vancouverove that every day I’m doing something different. Each and every order is one-of-a-kind and custom made for that client.\u00a0I also love seeing people’s reactions to my cakes – it definitely makes the long hours worthwhile.<\/p>\n

\n

How early should brides book with you?<\/h3>\n

As soon as they have a date! It’s always best to book as far in advance as possible because some dates, especially in the summer months, book up very quickly.<\/p>\n

What kind of trends do you see this year for wedding cakes?<\/h3>\n

Last year was a lot of rustic buttercream and fresh flowers – this year I’ve got a lot of couples wanting over the top, elaborate cakes. Plenty of metallic accents and sugar flowers it seems.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the craziest cake you\u2019ve ever had to make (wedding and non-wedding)?<\/h3>\n
\n

Wedding – a towering 11 tier cake that had to be delivered to the venue in three different pieces because it was too big to fit in my SUV. It had lots of gold and bling, and fresh flowers.\u00a0Non wedding – probably a life size R2D2 cake. It was so heavy I needed help carrying it to the area in the park where the party was being held. By the time we had it to their table there was a whole trail of excited children chasing after us wanting to check it out – it was so cute!<\/p>\n

What’s your favourite cake that you’ve ever made?<\/h3>\n

It’s hard to pick just one! I think one of my favourites would be a Finding Nemo cake with Dory and Marlin in the jellyfish fields – It was just a small simpler one but I love how it turned out.\u00a0I also love all of the food themed orders – cakes that are made to look like other food – like sushi or poutine!<\/p>\n

\"VancouverWhat are you most proud of so far in your business?<\/h3>\n
I\u2019m proud of the creativity and artistry that goes into each order. You won\u2019t see other cakes recreated, whether it\u2019s made by WPFP or someone else. We strive to make sure everything is unique. Custom cakes are in fact edible works of art thus it\u2019s important to only take on so many orders per week to make sure enough time and love goes into each product. Everything is crafted by hand – we don\u2019t rely on\u00a0store-bought items or the use of an edible printer.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about the art!<\/div>\n

Tell me something about yourself that I may have missed<\/h3>\n

Sometimes long days at the kitchen require \u201c8-tracks\u201d playlists to be blasted while working. Anything from 90\u2019s hits to Disney sing-a-longs can be heard regularly.<\/p>\n
